Dear Visitors,

Having just returned from Burma on a Pilgrimage of 26
days, visiting the war cemeteries in Rangoon, Taukkyan,
Thanbyuzayat and many of the Battlegrounds of the Burma
campaign including Magway, Prome, Taungup, Kalewa and
Ramree Island, crossing the Arakan Yoma and the Bay of
Bengal. The trip was arranged by Myanmar Explorer Tour
from Yangon.
If any of you are of a like mind, don't let age put
you off. Nancy (75) and I (83) suffered all the
hardships and there were many, and enjoyed every
thrilling adventure. Ploughing through mud and getting
bogged down, lying full length in a small SAMPAN at
night looking up at millions of stars in a clear sky, up
the chaung to Ramree Town.
We will send a full account of this "Adventure" to
DEKHO ! and may be they will print it.Putting everything
together for a trip like this entails a lot of work,
visas, a good guide, reliable local tour agency with
some "pull" in the right places as 90% of the places we
visited were forbidden zones to foreign visitors. We
required many Military Permits to go to these places,
but it was a lot of fun, a pre-occupation at some of the
Road Blocks and Check Points was "Why do you want to
come to such out of the way places ?"
Our passport were looked at with curiosity, but the
welcome in these places was so sincere and they treated
us like VIPs. None of them had seen Europeans before.
While we were on this trip, we placed crosses and
poppies for other DEKHO! readers on graves or columns at
various cemmteries including one on the landing place at
Ramree Island in memory of those who lost their lives
there.
