Yangon
Yangon, the commercial capital city is the main
gateway to Myanmar. Evergreen and cool with lush
tropical trees, shady parks and beautiful lakes, Yangon
has earned the name of Garden City of the East. Yangon
was founded by King Alaungpaya on the site of a small
village called Dagon in 1755. The name Yangon means "End
of Strife" and was under British control after Second
Anglo-Myanmar War in 1852. The present day Yangon covers
over 350 sq.km and has a population of 5 million
Shwedagon Pagoda, National Museum and colonial style
buildings are high light of Yangon.
Mandalay
Mandalay, the last capital of the Myanmar Kings, is
located in Central Myanmar, 668 km north of Yangon. It
is a centre of Myanmar traditions arts and crafts. It
was built by King Mindon ( father of the last King Sibaw
) in 1857. Today, it is the second largest city boasting
its rich cultural heritage. It is also the
commercial centre with rail, road, river and air links
to all parts of the country. Mandalay Palace, Mandalay
Hill, Mahamuni Buddha Image, World Biggest Book, U Bein
Teak bridge and many of Mandalay handicrafts centres are
high light of Mandalay.
Bagan
Bagan is the main tourist attraction in Myanmar. One
of the richest archaeological sites in Asia, it is
located on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River.
Also being the capital of first Myanmar Empire, Bagan
covers an area of 42 sq.km containing over two thousand
pagodas and temples of the 11th-13th century.
The whole city with ruined temples and pagodas are
highlight of Bagan. Among 2000 monuments, Ananda Temple,
Shwezigon Pagoda, Dhammayangyi Temple, are special. A
visit to lacgureware factory and enjoying sunset over
Bagan from one of the high level pagoda are very unique.
Inle Lake
This vast picturesque lake, 878 meters ( 2880 ft )
above sea-level is one of the main tourist attractions
in Myanmar. The lake, 22 km long and 5 km wide, has a
population of some 170,000 , many of them live on
floating islands of vegetation. Inlay Lake, natural and
unpolluted is famous for its seenic beauty and the
unique leg-rowing of the Inthas, the native lake
dwellers.
Other Attractions Places
Kyaikhtiyo
Known as Golden Rock. Located in the South where you
can see a gold gilded boulder, precariously perched on
the edge of the hill over 1100 m above sea level.
Mrauk U
This 15th century ancient city of Rakhine Kingdom is
known for its old temples.
Pyay ( Prome )
285 km north of Yangon, an archaeological site of the
ancient Pyu capital ( 5th to 9th century A.D ).
Pyin Oo Lwin ( Maymyo )
Former hill station and summer retreat for British
officers in colonial days. Delightfully cool and
pleasant the whole year round with flowers.
Kalaw
Kalaw is a centre for those who love trekking to near
by villages in Shan state.
Beaches
For those who love the white sand and blue sea,
Myanmar present unspoilt beaches at Ngapali, Chaungtha
and Ngwe Saung.
